What Can Teachers Do in the Classroom to Promote Internet Safety?

There are many things that teachers can do to help their students understand the importance of being safe on the Internet.

  • You can make sure that you have a full understanding of your district's AUP.
  • Constantly remind students of the AUP at your district. Post signs for reminders.
  • Be familiar with the network filters that have been set up by your district.
  • Investigate any software programs which could help in keeping your students safe on the Internet.
  • Create share group among teachers so that internet safety curriculum is in alignment.
  • Teach your students about internet safety -- and continue small lessons/reminders throughout the year.
  • Learn about cyberbullying so that you can recognize any difficulties of problems with your students.
  • Learn about what is appropriate or not appropriate to share about your students on the Internet.
  • Create activities appropriate for the age of your students.
  • Have conversations with your students concerning what you expect from them when they go online.
  • Do not allow students to search and wander around on the Internet. Have specific sites that you want them to go to.
  • Constantly monitor in the classroom when students are on a computer. Do not allow them to group around someone's computer.
  • Be aware if students are clicking monitors off or switching screens quickly.
  • Investigate all technology tools that you are wanting to use in the classroom before you introduce them to your student.
  • Remember, that you are responsible for keeping students safe in your classroom.
  • Do not give a substitute teacher the responsibility of putting students on computers until you have had a full discussion with him/her.

Keeping Personal Information Safe

It is important to protect our students online. But, with the new technologies available, it is difficult for teachers to know and understand the proper way of communicating online without putting their students at risk.

Here are a couple of important tips for teachers who use the online venue. Some of these were taken from the CIESE Website:
  1. AUP -- make sure that an aup is in place at your school. Be aware of whats in you aup as well as make sure that you parents and students understand the AUP content.
  2. If you are posting student information on the web, please don't use student names. Either don't use any names or only their first names. Assigning a nickname could be an alternative to adding a student's real name to a page on the Internet.
  3. If you are posting student pictures on the web, you must have permission from the parent to do so. Don't post pictures that are easily identifiable.
  4. Parents must give approval for their child's work to be published on the web.
  5. Teachers who have web sites must be aware that whatever they post on that site is sent into cyberspace for all to see. Teachers need to make sure that they only post appropriate materials.
